A dietitian is a healthcare professional with robust qualifications. They’ve earned a bachelor’s degree, completed 1200 hours of supervised practice, and successfully passed the national examination. Many dietitians also pursue advanced education, such as master’s degree, or obtain specialized certifications in areas like diabetes or nutrition support.

The term “nutritionist” is not a regulated title in many places, meaning that it doesn’t necessarily require specific certifications or formal training for someone to call themselves a nutritionist. Unlike dietitians, who must meet strict educational and licensing requirements, individuals can use the title “nutritionist” without having to adhere to standardized qualifications.

While some nutritionists may indeed have formal education or a certification in nutrition or related fields, others may have little to no formal training, making it important for consumers to exercise caution when seeking nutritional guidance from anyone other than a dietitian.

Collaborating with a dietitian offers numerous benefits for individuals looking to improve their nutrition and overall health. Dietitians excel in crafting personalized nutrition plans, providing evidence-based advice, and offering specialized guidance for medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. They empower clients with knowledge about food choices, portion control, and label reading, while also assisting with weight management, allergies, and sports nutrition. Importantly, dietitians promote not just healthy eating but also the concept of food freedom, helping individuals develop a balanced and sustainable relationship with food. They’re dedicated allies in fostering healthier eating habits and overall well-being, ensuring clients can enjoy both nutritional wisdom and the freedom to savor food.

The frequency of check-ins or follow-ups with a dietitian will vary from person to person. At Dietitian Group, we focus on helping our clients make sustainable changes over time, helping them achieve their long-term health goals. Because of this, the average client will work with their dietitian for 6-12 months. At your initial visit with your dietitian, they will make recommendations on your care plan and estimated timeline based on your medical history and personal needs.
